Training Rides

These are two of my favorite training rides: General Crook Trail and Mingus Mountain.

Saturday, April 28: General Crooks Trail. The ride starts in Camp Verde and travels up Hwy 260 also called General Crook Trail. From the high desert of Camp Verde we climb steadily to the pine forests and the Mongollon Rim. Refreshments are on your own in the towns of Strawberry and Pine before descending back down to the desert floor. 60 and 100 mile options.

Sunday, April 29: Mingus Mountain. This route goes from the base of Mingus Mountain in the town of Cottonwood and up to the mining-town-turned-art-colony which is Jerome. If you can, continue onto the summit of Mingus and down the other side. Regroup at Roberts Marketplace on 89A in Prescott Valley.

There are two ways to return:

1. Return back over Mingus again. The views are fantastic and the switchbacks are fun. (60 miles total. For a shorter option, turn around at the summit of Mingus.)
2. The more gentler option is a rolling ride out to I-17. Travel only 6 miles on I-17 to Camp Verde, and then back to Cottonwood. The gentler ride is 100 miles.

For anyone who hates to descend:

General Crooks Trail is nothing to worry about. The road gently sways left and right. I'm definitely breaking on the way down, but I don't think it's scary.

Coming down Mingus Mountain, however, requires focus and good bike handling skills. (I recommend you come to the clinic on descending.) If you hate to descend, you may want to take the gentler option, returning via I-17.

Cycling Clinics

On the bike training sessions with Coach Jeb:

- Descending skills, climbing, group riding skills.
- If anyone is time trialing or racing, let me know and we can schedule a bike clinic.

Workshops:

Saturday night: Coach Jeb Stuart tells us how to Peak for the Big Event. Don't do what I do - train harder and harder right up to the big event, then show up tired and mentally burnt out. Coach Jeb shows you how to do it right, whatever your big event for the season - PBP, an American randonnee, or multi-day tour.

Sunday morning: Workshop on PBP at breakfast. We'll discuss what to expect, and how to have a successful ride. Physical training is only one element to having successful randonnee. Knowing what to expect before you get there. I've asked some people to contribute to this event. If any PBP veterans would also like to contribute to this session, please let me know.

Consulting with the Coach
Coach Jeb is available for one-on-one consulting. If you're training with a power meter or heart rate monitor, bring a file from an important event and Coach Jeb will review it and discuss it with you. Perhaps you want an opinion on your training plan. Of course, you don't need an appointment to talk to the coach. He'll be with us the entire weekend.

Restorative Yoga
This is not your power yoga class. Restorative yoga is meant to leave us nourished and well rested. It's a gentle, meditative practice that uses supported poses and slow deep breathing to revitalize and restore energy. Postures are deeply supported by blankets, blocks, or other props and are held for several minutes at a time. (This is one of the most popular yoga classes at my yoga studio.)
