Plaque at the Tom Mix Monument. It says, "Tom Mix whose spirit left his body on this spot." What happened was that the famous western actor Tom Mix had a traffic accident here. His car headed down into a wash (now known as the Tom Mix wash). When the car abruptly stopped, a bag in the back seat was thrown forward and hit poor Tom in the back of the head, and broke his neck. "Death by Luggage" I guess you could say.
