600 KM Ride Report, April, 2009
by Susan Plonsky

Thurs, April 23: When Mike Allen finished his brevet this past weekend (see my post below), his first thoughts were to all those riders that helped him - Stephen Kenny gave encouragement on their trek up Helmet Peak, Bruce Chandler, our on-call brevet support, drove out to the course with ice water and electrolytes, Dave Glasgow did a drive-by on his way home at my request and phoned in some intel. Those are the riders that I know of.

Wed, April 22: Results are posted. Yes, Mike Allen finished before 9 PM Sunday, and just before the 40 hour limit. It couldn't have been any closer. He was at the outskirts of Casa Grande and had a flat. A pick up truck stopped and that's where I found Mike, repairing a tire in the dark by the lights of a truck. That passerby was an angel, but he must have thought I was the devil, as I jumped out of my truck, waving my arms and yelling, "You got 10 minutes. Get on that bike!" I was proud of Mike; he didn't once ask me for a lift, even when he thought making the time limit was hopeless, even though he'd ridden over 370 miles, even though he'd been awake for over 40 hours with only a couple hours sleep in Elgin, but he rode like he stole it and now he's a Super Randonneur.
